Bayview is a diverse and vibrant community in the heart of Madison. The Bayview Foundation not only provides affordable housing, but it also builds community through arts, education, and recreation. However, its 60's-era residences and community center were showing their age. Informed by an extensive and thoughtful community engagement process, Bayview's reimagined campus responds to the needs of its community and the city by providing a colorful array of affordable townhomes, apartments and open spaces. Each space, from playground to community gardens, images the unique and playful personality of the neighborhood that built it.
Features include a mass-matrix planting of native species, a central green, nature-play zone, basketball courts, permeable pavement, custom furniture, and a sweeping network of paths and streetscapes. Landscape architecture services included City of Madison review and project entitlement.

Early in the design process, 'The Vine' became the metaphor for Bayview's community-connecting site design. This was a natural fit for a highly diverse community with many avid gardeners. A pattern of nodes and walkways reach into the landscape, but every branch of circulation feeds back to the community center and central lawn. This intertwining of public and private spaces is key to the health and vitality of Bayview's community and helps to ground residences in a self-sustaining environment unlike any other in the city.
