Bradstreet's Landing
Bradstreet's Landing
Rocky River, OH
Rocky River, OH
On a dark October night in 1764, unexpected surge waves crashed against the shore of Lake Erie where British Colonel John Bradstreet and his fleet had stopped to set up camp en route to Fort Niagara. The result was devastating-- a loss of nearly half the fleet's 60 boats and supplies. Forced to sort through the wreckage for days, the 1,500 troops then hobbled their way back to New York, some on foot.
Centuries later, this 5.6 acre park with a 565' pier, beloved for fishing, beach glass hunting, and sightseeing, was in desperate need of repair. Beginning with a master planning process, the design for Bradstreet Landing builds upon the site's incredible history to create a fresh public amenity rich with story.
Landscape architectural services included master planning, concept design, custom railing and furnishings, hardscape, and planting design.
This project was completed under the tenure of SmithGroup. Construction by QCI Group.

The design for Bradstreet Landing builds upon the site's incredible history. 'The Fleet' abstracts the tension between human vessels and the natural forces of the great lake. The re-constructed pier uses custom railings and shade structures evocative of a ship's hull and masts. Extensive design prototyping ensured that the railings would safely function for fishing and ADA-access while also establishing the primary design language of the park's redevelopment. Canted planter boxes bring imagery of the Great Lakes' dune-landscape physically onto the pier as other elements of detail and craftsmanship retell the history of this beloved community space.
