At the east end of UW Madison's campus, the Hamel Music Center establishes an iconic gateway to the University with expressive architecture and a lyrical landscape. Fluted precast panels function as a shield from the bustling noises of an active streetscape, thus protecting the acoustical integrity of the concert hall inside. Geometric planters of perennials, grasses, and ornamental trees punctuate the urban composition as melody against the backdrop of the rhythmic facade.
Landscape architectural services included site layout and grading, furnishings, site wall detailing, planting design, and guidance through the City of Madison entitlement process.
This project was completed under the tenure of Saiki Design. Architecture by Strang and Steinberg Hart. Constructed by JP Cullen. Photography by Shane Bernau.

Music and architecture share a cultural lineage, both creating a sensory experience and representing the height of a civilization's artistic expression and advancement. As a landscape for our ears, music was influential to the design concept. The site is relatively small in context to the building it hosts, yet each element, including luminescent pavers, textured planter walls, and perennial blooms, is treated as a contributing member in this urban arrangement.
