Vanilla 301

Madison, WI

Common to so many cities across the country, Madison, WI finds itself in a housing shortage. Although thousands of units are being added each year, the diversity of housing stock is limited.  Vanilla 301 targets an increasingly uncommon scale of development--at a modest 30 units with ground-floor retail, the project provides urban-infill density while fitting into a neighborhood, rather than replacing it.  Preservation of a mature street tree defines both the landscape and the architectural massing.  Site furnishings echo the structural use of mass-timber and the warm tones of the interior design.

Bernau Design is providing landscape architectural and entitlement services to make this a beautiful place, honoring of its neighborhood context and oriented to the street.

Design Concept

The site design uses orthogonal forms and grid organization to parallel the 12'x12' mass-timber module of the architecture.  The front entry void in the building mass establishes a dialogue between the site and architecture and sets the stage for social interaction softened by drifts of plantings and pedestrian amenities.
