'The Nick' is a 30,000 sq ft facility home to sports courts, fitness, and UW Madison's Swimming and Diving program. The innovative facility is also the first major project implemented under the current campus master plan. Integral to the campus vision is a 'green street', linking pedestrian traffic along an athletic corridor to Camp Randall Stadium on the opposite west end. The streetscape prioritizes pedestrian and bike traffic with amenities such as street trees, site furniture, building setbacks for increased plantings, and visible stormwater management.
Along the street, a runnel directs roof water through a series of open scuppers and infiltrates runoff in lushly planted rain gardens. The runnel steps down with topography and uses a custom channel coping in a site wall plinth to put stormwater on display and anchor the architecture to the site.
This project was completed under the tenure of Saiki Design. Architecture by HOK and Workshop Architects. Civil and Structural Engineering by Bloom Companies. Photography by Shane Bernau.

The design for the Nicholas Recreation Center successfully accommodates 4-sided architecture-- a common challenge for campus projects where multiple building entries, streetscape frontages, and pedestrian corridors must interface in an active public realm. 'The Green Street' was the driving force behind the site design and manifests in healthy dialogue between the architecture and the street.
